NIT Warangal boy lands `80L offer

Up to 90 per cent graduates likely to get good offers

National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal is scoring big on placements this year. With a few months still to go for the end of the academic year, a whopping 78 per cent of B.Tech (final year) students have got job offers, making the institute as much a preferred destination for top recruiters as the other top technology institution, IIT-Hyderabad.

The plum offer came from Morgan Stanley, for its London office. The `80 lakh per annum offer was made to a final year electronics and communication engineering student. It is the highest offer an alumnus of the Warangal institute has received. Two years back, Facebook recruited two students at `57 lakh per annum.

The number of offers from international firms has gone up over last year. Students were offered jobs in Taiwan, Singapore and the United Kingdom after completing their studies.

Taiwan-based Mediatek made an offer of `36 lakh while Direct I, having overseas branches in Dubai, offered `29 lakh this year. Some 170 companies had participated in the recruitment drive last year; this year, 160 have finished campus placements. Public sector undertakings such as GAIL and ONGC will be visiting shortly.

Dr G Amba Prasada Rao, in-charge of Training and Placement, is confident that 85 to 90 per cent of graduates will be offered jobs this year. In branches like computer science, nearly 95 per cent of students have got job offers, with other branches not too far behind.

It seems, though, that companies are not so keen on recruiting postgraduate students. Placements here were a little over 35 per cent and may go up to 50 to 55 per cent, the same as last year.

“B.Tech students can be utilised in any area, but with M.Tech students, the scope is limited because of their specialisation study for two years. Hence companies prefer UG students,” the placement officer said.
