Gang took `8L in old notes from Madhapur woman

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, JAN. 20

Three constables and another person were booked for extorting `8 lakh in demonetised currency from a housewife in Madhapur.

The woman who had the cash approached a middleman for exchanging the currency, and he tipped off the cops.

The cops threatened the woman that they would leak information about her to the media and took `8 lakh from the `10 lakh she had.

The cops are Dhan Singh, Pavan and Vikram Reddy.

Ravi Kumar mediated the deal.

The woman, a resident of Kondapur, had `10 lakh in demonetised `1,000 notes.

She approached Ravi Kumar to exchange the old currency, and she offered him 25 per cent as commission. After the deal was done, Ravi called the victim to Ameerpet for the exchange on January 6.

When she reached Ameerpet, Ravi told her that the party exchanging the currency was waiting for them in Madhapur. He along with her drove to Madhapur via Jubilee Check Post. While they were passing through Ayyappa Society, four cops intercepted their vehicle. They found the `10 lakh in a bag in the car, and she could not reveal any details.

The cops threatened her that they would leak news about her to the media and file a criminal case. She got scared and as per her request they asked her to give `8 lakh and left her.

She filed a complaint with Madhapur police on Thursday. Police found before starting from Ameerpet Ravi had tipped off the three cops, who staged a vehicle check and extorted money from the woman.

Senior police officials from Cyberabad said the victims had requested them not to disclose the woman's identity.

“Initial inquiries proved the role of the three suspects in the case. But we suspect more names including insiders in the conspiracy.

“We are also checking if they had links to other gangs involved in currency exchange,” they said.

A case under Section 392 (robbery) was booked against the four suspects.
