Anil, Nazar in quarters

Appoorwa will clash with Nirmala in the title round of women’s section

Syed Nazarullah of Nizamabad reached the quarterfin­als of Telangana Green Carrom Senior State Championsh­ip being played at Anandnagar Welfare Associatio­n Sports Academy auditorium in Hyderabad.

Nazarullah outclassed seasoned national player S. K. Jaffer at 22-08, 25-24. In the sixth board of first game Nazarullah scored a white slam to complete his domination. In the second game, the players were heading neck to neck up to the conclusion of the fourth board with Nazarullah having a slender lead at 14-13. However, Jaffar jumped to 24 taking 11 points in the fifth board.

Unperturbe­d, Nazarullah won the sixth and seventh boards to take the second game at 25-24.

He will next meet sixth seeded S. Adithya of V-10.

Other quarterfin­al matches of men’s singles are between V. Anil Kumar and D. Ravinder Goud; L. Suryapraka­sh vs Naveen, and M. A. Hakeem against Mohammed Ahmed.

Meanwhile, reigining world champion S. Appoorwa and six times national champion P. Nirmala, both from tournament sponsor Life Insurance Corporatio­n of India, will meet in the women’s singles finals in a much awaited clash between the two titans.

In earlier rounds, Lalith Swamy, a seasoned player from Malkajgiri, downed 16th seeded MVSNV Prasad of ITRC. The match was a tough fight for Prasad right from the beginning. With scores even at 18-18 in the sixth board, Prasad pocketed the first game by scoring 4 points each in the 7th and 8th boards.

Lalith won the 2nd game at 2108. In the final game, Lalith bounced back with all his seasonal experience and took 11 points in the last board by scoring a black slam.
