THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COLOURS

-

Colours hold a significant place in our life, especially in the spiritual progress of an individual. Colour is the property possessed by an object to reflect or emit light. For instance, an object looks red because it absorbs everything that white light contains and reflects the colour red.

Every colour has a specific meaning and significance. However, the meanings of colours vary in accordance with different cultures and circumstances. The colour red is vibrant and exuberant. It is the colour of energy, passion, action, ambition and determination. It also represents anger and sexual passion. Orange is the colour of social interaction and optimism. It signifies warmth and compassion and is the colour of the second or sacral

chakra. Yellow is the colour of the mind and intellect. It is a bright, happy, optimistic and cheerful colour. Green is the colour of balance and growth. It symbolises health, fertility, good fortune and abundance. Blue is the colour of trust, peace and tranquility. It is the colour of inclusiveness. Anything that is vast is blue, for example, the sky or the ocean. It is the colour of the throat or fifth chakra. Indigo is the colour of intuition and the vast cosmic consciousness. It represents idealism and structure. Violet is the colour of the imagination and creativity. It symbolises royalty and nobility. It also represents healing of mind and body. White is the symbol of purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. White is not really a colour. Where there is no colour, only white exists. It is the absence of colour that makes it white. At the same time, white is allinclusive because white light contains all the seven colours of the rainbow. Black is the colour of mystery and the unknown. Unlike other colours, black does not emit anything, it absorbs everything.

Colours can help us heal and also elevate ourselves on the spiritual plane. Those people who follow the ascetic path wish to attain Vairagya, which literally means transparent or beyond colour. My dear readers, I wish that wherever you are, you become a part of your surroundings, but don’t get attached to it. Verily then, you will be able to explore all dimensions and colours of life and attain the ultimate purpose of life, that is Vairagya.
