BENGAL IN SEARCH OF HONOURS IN SUMMIT

-

Bambolim (Goa), March 25: Bengal will look to maintain their supremacy with a record-stretching 32nd Santosh Trophy football title when they face hosts Goa in the final here on Sunday.

Goa, hosts for the third time, will be seeking seek their sixth title but will be up against a Bengal side who have been consistent in the tournament. Aided by a strong defence, Bengal are yet to concede a goal in regulation time so far.

Goa’s form was patchy in the group stage, but lifted on time to beat Kerala in the semi-finals. They will look to keep their newfound momentum going in the final at the GMC Athletic Stadium.

Goa lost to Bengal in 1972 but beat Kerala to win the title in 1990.

The home side will be aided by the vocal presence of their home fans, but it could turn out to be a doubleedged sword too.

After dominating the first half against Kerala, Goa came under pressure in the second half. Goalkeeper Bruno Colaco, who produced a fine performance, and veteran defender Peter Carvalho, saved them.

Goa coach Mateus Costa said his team would put their best foot forward to win.
