Indian girls rule the court

After loss to South Korea, hosts come back hard to outclass Malaysia

After losing to Korea 0-2, the Indian Under 16 girls came back hard at Malaysia to brush them aside with a 2-0 scoreline as Hyderabad’s Sai Dedeepya led the proceeding­s from the front in the singles category by clinching a thumping win in the last league match of the Asia Oceania Junior Fed Cup tennis tournament for Girls Under 16 being payed at the DLTA Complex in New Delhi.

In the match against Malaysia, Dedeepya was on fire since the beginning. She was in no mood to let go of the opportunit­y as she dominated Malaysia’s Juliana Shalini Ganendra in straight sets to win the first singles with the score reading 6-0, 60.

In the other singles match it took a lot of hardwork for Humera Shaik to clinch the victory.

After going a set down against Sharifah Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman 2-6, Humera came back hard at her rival to take the second set at 6-3.

The deciding set went neckand-neck and into the tie-breaker as both girls brought out their ‘A’ game. However, Humera had the last laugh to take the final set and match at 7-6(3).

The inconseque­ntial doubles match was not played after India sealed the deal with the first two singles.

Earlier, the match against South Korea was a nightmare as the hosts were blanked 2-0.

In the singles match, Salsa Parag went down to Dayeon Back with 3-6, 2-6 while Humera lost to Hyeran Yun 0-6, 4-6.

However, the match against Kazakhstan served up entertaini­ng stuff as the match eventually went in India’s favour.

In the singles, Salsa took the match away from Takhmina Zhana Tova 6-3, 6-2 while Humera beat Anastasia Astakhova in a hard fought battle after losing the first set 0-6. The other two sets were also close but the Indian girl won them 7-5, 7-6(3).

The doubles match however turned out to be a disappoint­ing outing for the Indian duo of Salsa and Dedeepya.

The Kazakhstan combinatio­n of Kamilya Shailina and Takhmina Zhanatova outclassed the hosts with a 6-3, 7-5 verdict for a consolatio­n win. THE RESULTS India bt Malaysia 2-0 (Y. Sai Dedeepya bt Juliana Shalini Ganendra 6-0, 6-0; Humera Shaik bt Shaifah Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).

India lost to South Korea 0-2 (Salsa Parag Aher lost to Dayeon Back 3-6, 2-6; Humera Shaik lost to Hyeran Yun 0-6, 46.

India bt Kazakhstan 2-1 (Salsa Parag Aher bt Takhmina Zhanatova 6-3, 6-2; Humera Shaik bt Anastasia Astakhova 0-6, 7-5, 7-6(3); Salsa Parag Aher/ Y. Sai Dedeepya lost to Kamilya Shailina/ Takhmina Zhanatova 3-6, 5-7.
