GHMC negligence stinks up IT district

Contract expires, no tractors to move garbage to dump yard

- KAMALAPATHI RAO H. I DC HYDERABAD, APRIL 5

Hyderabad’s IT corridor, a key part of the state’s plan to attract global investors, has unfortunately turned into Garbage City due to a lack of foresight and negligence in urban planning.

The IT corridor falls under the twin circles of Serilingampally – Circle 11 and 12 – and the GHMC was operating a total of 29 tractors to lift and move waste from garbage collection points.

According to an agreement between the GHMC and the tractor contractors the tenure of the 29 vehicles ended on March 31 of this year and this has led to piles of ignored garbage at the collection points. Officials simply did not pay attention to the contract’s deadline, it has been alleged.

GHMC staff has been collecting garbage through door-to door visits but this waste has not been lifted from the collection points for the past few days. Residents and commercial enterprises neighbouring these garbage collection points have been complaining of an unbearable stench emanating from the ignored piles of rubbish.

The grim situation persists across Gachibowli, Kondapur and Madhapur – all part of the city’s extensive IT infrastructure.

K. Venkata Ramana, a manager of a general store at Madhapur said residents have been registering repeated complaints with the GHMC about the bad smell but no action has been taken so far by authorities.

“Usually, the GHMC collects dry and wet garbage from residences here and just dumps it all at the garbage collection points, as per schedule. Soon after the workers dump the rubbish, the tractors are responsible for movement of the trash away from these sites. But for the past five days, there has been no activity and garbage has been piling up,” he said.

GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said officials would now use other vehicles to transport the garbage. He said the sites would be cleared by Thursday morning.
