Reservoirs set to bring cheer to city outskirts

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, APRIL 20

Daily water supply will be a reality for residents in the peripheral areas of the city by the end of this year, said municipal administration minister K.T. Rama Rao on Thursday. Of course, this is provided the city gets good rains. These areas now get water once in 10 days.

Mr Rama Rao was speaking after the Metro Water Board made operational a water storage reservoir at Nallagandla. Mr Rama Rao said that in addition, `1,400 crore had been sanctioned to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and `1,000 crore to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for works to improve water supply.

He said another `4,000 crore would be paid for from the Budget to improve water supply in the city,

Water woes of the residents of houses on the city outskirts are likely to come to an end, with the Metro Water Board set to commission 12 reservoirs.

After these reservoirs go on stream, residents of Gopanpally, Nallagandla, Hafeezpet, Shapurnagar and other peripheral areas can look forward to sufficient drinking water supply.

Among these, three of the reservoirs will be commissioned in Gouthamnagar and Malkajgiri which will address the long pending demand of local residents for adequate water supply.

Once operational, the reservoirs, which have inbuilt capacity to supply large areas with water, will facilitate nearly 20,000 new connections, a senior official said.

The board to likely approve one lakh water connections in the peripheral areas, especially the `1 connections for below poverty line families under Mission Bhagiratha. The Water Board has set a target of providing 60,000 connections this month alone.
