Work on cable bridge at Durgam lake this week
Construction of the much-awaited cablestayed bridge across Durgam Cheruvu Lake will begin this week. The project is likely to be completed in two years. The GHMC has sanctioned `184 crore and the project has been bagged by Larsen & Toubro. The foundation stone is likely to be laid on April 29, and after that the area will be inaccessible to the public.
The bridge will begin from the existing junction point near iLabs, at the Inorbit Mall end, deflect to the left at the TS Tourism Department parking area, cross over the Durgam Cheruvu Lake, deflect to the left near the lake’s walking track, pass along the boundary of the hillock, and finally deflect to the right to meet Road No. 45, right before the main entrance to Ambedkar University.
A GHMC official said, “Preparatory works have been completed, including the markings for pillars. Once the work begins, the area will become inaccessible to the public. We have asked L&T to complete the work within two years.”
This bridge is much needed as there has been a tremendous increase in vehicular traffic, because of the development of IT centres and offices in HITEC City and the Gachibowli area. There is congestion on the roads leading to these areas, especially Road No. 36 and Road No. 45 of Jubilee Hills. Once the bridge is completed,
1. It will enhance connectivity between Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and HITEC City; and it will cater to the ever-increasing traffic generated by IT developments in and around HITEC City.
2. It will reduce congestion along Jubliee Hills Road No. 36
3. It will be an iconic structure with an extradosed cable-stay construction.
4. Traffic will move smoothly between Road No. 45 and HITEC City, with integration of the proposed elevated corridor on Road No. 45
