100 junctions in city up for upgrade

Project aims to clear traffic congestion at crossroads

- DC CORRESPONDENT

With a view to effecting improvements in traffic movement and reducing journey time, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has taken up a project on the junctions in the twin cities. GHMC has appointed a consultancy that would provide detailed improvement projections for as many as 100 junctions.

Work on this would start soon on a few junctions in the first phase. A field survey and traffic topography survey were completed in respect of about 30 junctions and the survey is now in progress at Puranapool (Jiyaguda).

The project aims at clearing traffic congestion at junctions and facilitating free left movements. Municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao has asked GHMC to first zero in on three to four important high-visibility junctions. Officials have started traffic surveys at the junctions.

Turning movement counts are conducted to obtain the directional distribution of traffic by vehicles.

This will help in identifying the critical turning movements for space allocation during the physical design of the intersection.

GHMC executive engineer Venkat Reddy said that in the first phase, 30 junctions would be taken up for improvement works.

Six junctions are at tender stage, four are under scrutiny, final DPR reports are to be submitted by consultants for nine junctions, and for 11 junctions is complete.

Executive engineer Venkata Reddy said the survey would ascertain as to how many vehicles pass through every junction, and how many of them would turn to each direction.

Based on these, the design will be prepared to improve the junctions.
