Online food delivery deals touch $300mn

While a cashless system has been adopted by most citizens in the country after demonetisa­tion, the food delivery through online transactio­ns has grown to $300 million in 2016 against $120 million the previous year.

Latest surveys on the growth of the online food orders have revealed that the telephonic orders for pizza and other food items will come down while the online orders will increase.

At present, the restaurant industry is worth $56 billion, of which $17 billion is registered with organised restaurant­s and about $15 billion is towards the home delivery market. The remaining has been recorded towards online orders.

The survey held by Bengaluru-based RedSeer in five major cities including Hyderabad found that an average of 1.6 lakh online orders for food have been registered in these cities in a day.

P.V. Ramana, a techie from Madhapur, said very few restaurant­s were offering online orders in Hyderabad. “Compared with Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi, the number of restaurant­s offering online orders is very less here. A few pizza hubs here have introduced mobile apps for online orders and we can pay at the time of order through credit/debit cards or net banking,” he said.

Sujana, another techie from Chandanaga­r, said online order facility for food is reducing both time and confusion among delivery boys.

“The apps are having location services. Based on our current location of workplace or home on Google maps, the delivery boys are reaching the doors. In telephonic orders, we should explain the delivery boys about the landmarks and should wait for them for at least five minutes after explaining them our address,” she said.

Spokespers­on of RedSeer Swati Taneja Kapoor said overall, the restaurant industry has recorded heavy growth.

“Within delivery, online medium is gaining traction. India is still being a nascent market as compared to mature markets like the UK where online delivery commands a much higher share of delivery orders. Partner restaurant­s are having a new business source on online platforms with the contributi­on as high as 35 per cent to their overall business currently,” she explained.
