Kin SOS to cops went unheeded

A 45-year-old tribal man on Saturday allegedly raped his widowed mother multiple times leading to her death in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, nearly 400 km from here, reports said on Sunday.

According to police, the accused identified as Hari Marandi dragged the old woman inside the house while she was brooming in front of the house at Dambaru Dahar village under Baisinga police limits in the district on Saturday morning.

While the woman managed to free herself from his clutches, he again dragged her inside and raped her in an inebriated state.

The accused allegedly raped his septuagena­rian mother at around 8.30 am.

The pervert did not stop there. He then repeatedly raped his mother in frequent intervals in verandah, on the bed and inside the room.

After around half an hour, the tribal woman rushed out and collapsed in front of the thatched house.

The neighbours, in a state of shock, gave her water where the victim narrated her ordeal.

An autopsy of the victim showed the bones of the woman’s skull were shattered into pieces and “some sharp-edged objects may have been inserted in her private parts”.

“The findings suggest that it was a brutal rape and murder,” said Dr S.K. Dhatterwal, head of the department of forensic medicine at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak, who conducted the postmortem examinatio­n.

The incident occurred the main accused Sumit, who is a Dalit, have been arrested by the Haryana Police which has formed a Special Investigat­ion Team (SIT) to probe the case.

Police on Sunday also said that the family of the victim suspected the involvemen­t of six more persons, out of whom five were related to the main accused.

Meanwhile, National Commission for Women member Rekha Sharma met the family of the victim and said she expects that the accused will get exemplary punishment like the killers.

The decomposed and mutilated body of the 23-year-old woman was found near the Industrial Model Township in Urban Estate, Rohtak, on May 11. when other family members were away.

While the villagers were planning to rush the woman to hospital, she breathed her last due to severe pain.
