Woman pushed to death from train by husband, pal

A 22-year-old woman was killed when her husband and his friend pushed her out of the Tamil Nadu Express bound for Delhi from Chennai following a heated argument between the three. The train was passing Kadavakuduru station in Chinnaganjam mandal of Prakasam district around 2.20 am on Wednesday when this happened.

The Government Railway Police in Ongole got news of the incident after the train reached Vijayawada, nearly 90 minutes later. Had the information been conveyed earlier, police say the woman could have been saved.

Some passengers alerted the TTE sleeping in a coach, S-9, after they noticed the verbal duel between the woman and the men near the door in S-8 coach. The TTE, Mr Radhakrishnan, however, only found the men when he rushed to the spot. He told this newspaper that he was shocked when the husband coolly told him that his friend has shoved his wife out of the train. He immediately informed the commercial control wing at Vijayawada.

According to Inspector Srinivasa Rao of the Government Railway Police (GRP), Ongole, the diseased has been identified as Alpana Kumari of Karbhiga village in Bihar’s Nalanda district. Her husband, Ashutosh Kumar, 23, belongs to Badaraj village in Bihar and his friend Dharmaveer Kumar, 22, is from Guvvalapur village near Patna. The two men worked for a fish export firm in Chennai and were on their way to Bihar. According to the TTE Mr Radhakrishnan, the couple had berth numbers 71 and 72 in S-10 coach and Dharmaveer had Berth No. 71 in S-12. However, they did not turn up to occupy the berths, which were allotted to waiting passengers. In-charge DSP Surya Chandra Rao of the railway police said the woman’s life could have been saved if the TTE had immediately alerted the guard and the pilot, who in turn would have alerted the controller to rush a rescue team and ambulance, which is stationed every 10 km in this section. TTE Radhakrishnan, however, claims that he had directly informed the controller. He said the accused were handed over to the GRP at Vijayawada. GRP CI Srinivasa Rao, who informed the dead woman’s relatives about her death, said that they told him that Ashutosh and Alpana were married 10 months ago and he has been harassing her because of some issues related to dowry. The CI said they are taking the accused into their custody from the Vijayawada police.
