Horses being made to gallop on wrong side run over
Two horses which were being made to gallop on the wrong side of the road were run over by a truck.
A video of the incident, which occurred near Siddiamber Bazaar, was doing rounds of the internet on Tuesday. The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday. The video was shot by a passerby on the other side of the road.
After the collision, both the horses fell in front of the truck. One of them was run over and on the spot and another one died after a few hours, police said. No case has been registered so far.
The incident occurred just as the Maharashtra government banned the traditional horsedrawn ‘Victoria’ carriages in Mumbai.
Ms Alokparna Sengupta from Human Society International said, “Horses go through unimaginable cruelty and are found injured, sick and malnourished. In addition, they are nervous and traumatised while going through traffic.”
Demanding a ban on horse drawn carriages, Ms Sengupta said, “Horse carriage owners should be booked under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 under Sections 3 and 11. What do horses know about the wrong side of the road? They looked traumatised.” She said the incident was the result of the irresponsibility of the owners.
Getting horses to gallop is something of a practice in some areas. A motorcyclist died in the city in February when he was hit by a galloping horse in Mailardevpally in the Old City.
