TOXIC MATERIALS POLLUTE CITY NALAS

-

A ten-km canal carrying highly toxic material from Jeedimetla to Chinthal covers the entire Quthbullapur constituency. The toxic waste is from a group of chemical industries, around which a residential zone has been developed. The air quality is highly polluted and even the rainfall of 5cm causes the polluted water to flow from the unfenced nala to the residential zone.

Mr. Bipin Saxena, who has made repeated complaints to the state pollution control board, fumed, “Chemical waste from the Jeedimetla IDA industries is illegally dumped in the 9-feet nala. It passes through the residential areas of Vinayaknagar, Ayodhyanagar, Birappanagar, all through the Quthbullapur constituency, to Balanagar. Many industries illegally dump the waste in the nala, which has no fencing, making it vulnerable.”

“The air quality in this area is different. One can easily feel the toxicity in the air. We have urged the pollution control board to check the air. I have tweeted this to the municipal minister thrice and repeatedly complained to PCB. But no action came. This area is not monsoon- ready. There is a high possibility of flooding in case of heavy rain,” he added.

The underground water is totally polluted due to industrial effluents and it’s unfit for drinking. The water can't be used unless treatment plants are installed. Not just the Quthbullapur division, but those living in Kompally, Fatehnagar and Balanagar have also been complaining of breathlessness.
