OPEN PIT CLAIMS ONE MORE LIFE

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Civic negligence claims yet another person’s life in the city.

A 23-year-old biker who was triple riding with his two friends, drove the bike into an allegedly unprotected under construction site of a subway in Vanasthalipuram on Sunday midnight and fell into the deep trench dug for the construction work.

One person died on the spot, while two others sustained severe injuries.

It was found that the pit dug in the middle of the road was barricaded on both sides, but was left open towards the front for workers movement. However immediately after the incident, the gap was closed. Locals blame lack of proper signages and poor lighting the reasons for such incidents. Police who suspect the rider could be drunk registered a case and started a probe.

The deceased was identified as K Raghavender, 23, and his two friends who sustained injuries were identified as E Ashok, 23, and L. Saikiran, 22.

The three persons are residents of Meerpet and went to attend a function in Hayathnagar on a bike no AP 29AP 5910, owned by Raghavender.

They were returning on the same bike and Raghavender was riding it. After crossing the Chintalkunta checkpost, they were heading towards Sagar ring road towards NH 65.

En route they had to pass through the road passing beside an under construction sub way site.

As the construction was going on in the middle of the busy road, it was barricaded on both the sides facing the road with barricades of about six feet height.

There were also barricades set up on the space which is meant for the entry and exit of workers and vehicles involved in the work. But it was found that when the accident occurred the barricades were not in place, as a result, Raghavender drove his bike into the construction area and along with the bike and his friends, fell in the trench, resulting in his instant death due to multiple injuries, while his friends sustained severe injuries. Vanasthalipuram Police registered a case for accidental death and for causing injuries.

“They seem to have entered through a small gap between the barricades. We are also probing if there is any negligence from the part of the contractor or the workers involved.” Vanasthalipuram Inspector P Muralikrishna said.

“Based on the evidences and the cc footages which are collecting from the nearby locations, we will proceed.” he added.
