Raze old buildings, or we will, says civic body
The GHMC has warned building owners who had been issued notices earlier to break down their dilapidated properties, to do so within the stipulated deadline.
If they fail to do so, the GHMC will raze the structures and file criminal case against the owners for risking human lives.
In a survey conducted in June 2016, about 2,010 buildings were identified as weak and dilapidated structures that could need demolition on further inspection.
Of these, 1,089 structures were razed to the ground last year. 93 structures were repaired and declared safe for the moment. Another 312 structures have been demolished in this current year.
At present there are about 828 buildings that have to be demolished. Notices were sent out to these buildings and a deadline was set to knock down the structures.
The highest number of weak structures were identified in circle 18, Secunderabad, 504.
GHMC commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy said, “The GHMC has decided to file criminal cases against owners who have yet not demolished dilapidated structures. This decision will minimise the loss of life. The corporation has already issued notices to all property owners who have been residing in dilapidated structures. Those living in the weak buildings have also been requested to vacate the premises.”
