Most schools set to reopen today
Teachers plan revision classes initially
A majority of schools, affiliated to different boards, will be reopening after the summer vacation on Monday. This includes government and private schools affiliated to Telangana School Education Department, schools affiliated to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) as well as ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education). However, some schools like Delhi Public School have started functioning from June 7 itself, while some ICSE schools are set to start classes from June 14.
In schools affiliated to the Telangana government, the academic year had started from March 21 itself after the completion of annual exams. It may be mentioned here that state education department had changed the academic calendar and made it in tune with CBSE and ICSE boards. This is the second year of its implementation.
However, students and parents are yet to adapt to this changed system. According to Srinivas Reddy, president of Telangana Private Schools, with over 14,000 schools across the state under its wing, “Attendance of students was not even 50 percent for the one month when classes were held before summer vacation started. Students and parents are used to the system of summer vacation starting soon after exams, with the new class to which the student is promoted, starting only post the vacation. This system has been in practice for decades. Therefore not many parents took the new schedule seriously and went ahead with their plans of a vacation. Even if they were in the city, very few attended the new class. With temperatures soaring sky-high, everybody just wanted a break!” he said. The same situation was witnessed in government schools.
According to school managements and teachers, in the next one week after school reopens, the focus will be on revision of what had been taught in the new class before the break. This would ensure that the newbies get to be abreast with whatever had been taught, while others can revise what has been taught earlier.
