Mafia threat to revenue staff

- L. VENKAT RAM REDDY

Officials and staff working in the revenue department and the stamps and registration department in the city and its outskirts have sought police protection as they are being threatened by the land mafia as more and more scams are coming to light.

They are being told not to help the CID and ACB teams by providing genuine land records and details. Representatives of various employees’ associations — RDOs, MROs, sub-registrars, land surveyors, and VROs — have submitted a representation to the state government seeking police protection.

They also met the chief secretary S.P. Singh on Saturday and informed him about the threats.

They told him that the threats have increased over the past one week as the names of influential persons have begun surfacing in the land scams. Mr Singh assured them that he would take up the matter with the Chief Minister and appropriate security measures will be taken.

Unidentified persons are calling up and warning them of dire consequences if they provide any details to CID/ACB teams about land transactions. What began as an investigation in Miyapur two weeks ago has now spread to the outskirts of the city, covering Ibrahimpatnam, Sherilingampally, Puppalaguda, and Shamshabad.

“We used to receive threats from land mafia when gangster Nayeem was alive. But that stopped after Nayeem was killed in an encounter. We are again receiving threat calls after the Miyapur land scam broke,” said an official.
