To protect pedestrians, the GHMC plans to prepare a blueprint of accident spots and causes in each place and then install safety check posts accordingly. The GHMC has appointed a consultant to study the situation at about 100 junctions.

According to data with the City Crime Records Bureau, about 37 per cent of accident victims were pedestrians this year, till May 31. Out of 620 road accidents, 240 involved pedestrians.

Based on the recommendations made by the Hyderabad traffic police on the causes of accidents involving pedestrians at junctions, the GHMC has decided to develop safety measures at the junctions. A report on 30 junctions has been submitted and the civic body is planning to call for tenders for the implementation of safety measures at these junctions.

GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy said the civic body would focus on the safety of pedestrians in the junctions’ development projects.

“We will install side barricades to prevent pedestrians from crossing the roads in a zigzag manner and will set up pedestrian holding zones at junctions. Besides this, we shall take other measurements like improvement of zebra crossings from the pedestrian holding zones, etc.,” he said.
