DOG RESCUED FROM DRAIN IN BEGUMPET

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, JUNE 18

A dog that survived for more than 24 hours in an overflowing drainage by clinging on to garbage at Street No. 5, Brahmanwadi, Begumpet, was rescued on Sunday.

The rescue lasted three hours and was performed by a group of five men who got into the drain with ropes against the swift current.

“The dog grew very nervous after seeing us and kept moving away. It was feeling very cold and finally allowed us to carry it from the drain. We were very lucky as it started raining very heavily just as we got out of the drain,” says Pradeep N, a member of the rescue team.

Locals called the animal rescue group Animal Warriors. The dog was fed warm milk and bathed by the volunteers before a check for injuries.

The incident highlighted the need for greater care for animals in the rainy season. Overflowing drainages, fallen trees and snapped electrical wires can prove risky for them.

“Most dogs and cats give birth before the rainy season in dry nalas. The nalas start overflowing when the monsoon begins, and pups or kittens are stranded,,” said Ms Preethi S, an animal lover.

Branches broken off by gales also have nests in them. “The best precaution would be to shift nests from weak branches before the rain gets too strong. Recently we lost a baby bird at Kukkatpally when a branch fell down but we could rescue another one,” said Mr Pradeep.

A member of Animal Warriors said three dogs were electrocuted after a tree fell on an electric wire at Miyapur. The group is checking for such potentially risky areas this year. Rescuers have saved 24 dogs, nine cats, 13 birds and five cows during the monsoon.
