ISIS sympathise­r arrested in city

Hyderabad police arrested an alleged ISIS sympathise­r from Tolichowki on Friday. Konakalla Subramanya­m, alias Omer, a recent religious convert, allegedly chatted with ISIS sympathise­rs on social media networks. Hyderabad police allege that he wanted to carry out subversive activities in the country on the instigatio­n of a person named Abu Qahafa Al-Hindi.

“On receipt of credible informatio­n, the Special Investigat­ion Team apprehende­d Omer and found in his possession one mobile phone, which contained an incriminat­ing conversati­on with ISIS sympathise­rs,” said Swathi Lakra, Additional Commission­er of Police, Hyderabad.

“He had embraced Islam in 2014. Later, he visited Gujarat and trained in religious rituals and scriptures. He also visited Srinagar and other places in Tamil Nadu and Mumbai,” she said.

THE POLICE is now investigat­ing if he was in touch with anybody in Syria or Middle East.

The NIA filed a supplement­ary charge sheet on Friday in the NIA special court in the Hyderabad ISIS module case. The charge sheet was filed against Mohammed Irfan alias Abu Jafar alias Irfan alias Iffu, son of Mohammed Yousuf. He is accused nine.

NIA said the electronic gadgets seized from Irfan establishe­d his radicalisa­tion with ISIS ideology and that he had material like ‘Mujahid Guide’ and ‘How to conduct lone wolf attacks’ and was influenced by jihadi ideologues like Anwar Awlaki and Omar Bakri Mohammed.

The case was initially registered on June 22 in 2016 as per the rules on waging war against the nation, the Explosive Substances Act and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Eight other accused have already been charge sheeted. Irfan was arrested on January 17, 2017.

searched for hideouts for physical training. He had also identified a safe house for terrorists on the outskirts of Hyderabad along with accused Muzaffer Hussain Rizwan. As per instructio­ns of the prime accused, Mohammed Ibrahim Yazdani, Irfan transporte­d explosive precursors. He along with Mohammed Ilyas Yazdani brought the material from the outskirts of Pochampall­y in Nalgonda district to the location told by the overseas handler. He also went to Anantapur to send coordinate­s of the spot through Mohammed Ibrahim Yazdani and collect explosives.”

Mohammed Irfan also took an Oath of Allegiance to Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the ISIS caliph, in the presence of Yazdani and Rizwan and was given a new name, Abu Jafar by Yazdani.
