TS receives more rains this year

The southwest monsoon is more vigorous over Telangana state than coastal Andhra and Rayalseema. TS has received six per cent more rainfall than Andhra Pradesh in June, and 54 per cent above normal overall.

The districts that were lashed with heavy to very heavy rainfall in 2016 in AP have not recorded a large amount of surplus rain so far; in fact, Vizianagaram is running at -14 per cent, Srikakulam at 6 per cent and Anantapur in Rayalaseema at 19 per cent.

In Telangana state, on the other hand, almost all districts except Karimnagar have recorded above 40 per cent surplus rain.

The rainfall pattern observed in 2016 was just the opposite. Guntur district in AP had received 112 per cent more rain than any other place, followed by Nellore, which received 87 per cent more rain.

In 2016, coastal AP and Rayalseema together recorded 87 per cent excess rainfall while TS recorded 43 per cent excess rain in June. East and West Godavari districts, Guntur, Krishna and Chittoor districts in Rayalseema recorded above 100 per cent surplus. Even Rayalaseema received 90 per cent excess rain and Kadapa and Kurnool districts recorded 90 per cent excess.

Except Khammam, all other TS districts recorded less than 40 per cent rain last year. Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Karimnagar, and Adilabad witnessed a dry June in 2016.
