3 hugs and warning to Pakistan

-

The camaraderie between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump was on full display on Tuesday as the two leaders heaped praise on each other, voiced appreciation for each other’s leadership and embraced more than once at the White House.

The two leaders underlined the close ties between their countries, with Mr Trump saying India has a “true friend” in the White House.

Following his first bilateral meeting with Mr Modi, Mr Trump said the friendship between the United States and India is built on shared values, “including our shared commitment to democracy”.

Though Mr Modi did not discuss the most pressing issue of H1B visa issue, he thanked Mr Trump for his “great leadership” in building US-India relations.

After Mr Trump finished his speech, Mr Modi walked towards the US president and hugged him. After Mr Modi’s speech, the two leaders again briefly embraced. Yet another hug was to come between the two, this time at the White House portico, as Modi departed for his hotel.

In a joint statement, Mr Trump and Mr Modi have called “on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries”.

Mr Trump, in his individual comments, said that “radical Islamic terrorism” would be destroyed.
