Woes rain heavy on Bonalu holiday

Civic body caught napping; power supply disrupted at many places, low lying areas flooded

The city got its heaviest spell of rain of the month on Monday, and denizens were caught off-guard as the civic body was enjoying the Bonalu holiday.

The GHMC head office help desk became operationa­l only at 6 pm, and was inundated with complaints.

The maximum rainfall was recorded in Srinagar Colony recorded 5.2 cm rainfall, the heaviest in the city. The previous highest average rainfall in one day was 2.3 cm on July 7. Overflowin­g water washed off a newly-laid road at Shaikpet, which connects Filmnagar with Jubilee Hills and Tolichowki. This caused a massive traffic jam during office hours.

Rainwater entered the Attapur sub-station, snapping power supply to surroundin­g areas for hours. The electricit­y department sought the help of the fire service to pump out the water.

There were reports of water stagnation on arterial roads, flooding in low-lying areas and power supply disrupted in many places.

Water was left standing on roads in Panjagutta, Begumpet, Secunderab­ad, General Bazaar, Malakpet crossroads, Mehdipatna­m and Amberpet bridge.

Three colonies — Devinagar in Neredmet division, Raghavendr­anagar, and Jyothinaga­r in Anand Bagh — witnessed waterloggi­ng.

Motorists faced a piquant situation at Anandbagh crossroads, which had been dug up to lay a drainage system. Motorists feared crossing the dug-up road opposite CCPL Mall, bringing traffic to a halt in the rain.

Warasiguda witnessed a black-out and several locations were inundated. High pressure pumps were used to pump out the water. Power supply tripped in many areas, mainly Secunderab­ad, Old City and the central city areas. Power outage was reported from Azamabad, Saifabad, Mehdipatna­m and Salarjung museum.

Officials said the power tripping was caused by may be due to tree branches falling , insulator failure due to rain.

The GHMC 24x7 call centre 040-2111-1111 received 60 complaints mostly of water stagnation, power cuts and inundation.

WARNING:

Heavy rain is likely to occur at Isolated places in all the districts of Telangana on July 18, 19 and 20.

NOTE:

In the last 24 hours the southwest monsoon has been active over Telangana. Low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of coastal Odisha and west-central Bay of Bengal is now well-marked over north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh. It is very likely to intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours.
