- DC CORRESPONDENT

Vinay Karampudi, a thirdyear student of Optometry at Hyderabad Central University, attempted suicide by overdosing on tablets. Some of his classmates alleged that the head of the Centre for Integrated Studies had been harassing him and not letting him clear his backlog saying that his attendance was inadequate.

University officials said that the student only had 57 per cent attendance, while the requirement was 75 percent.

The student, a native of Nalgonda, attempted suicide on the campus at around 4 pm on Thursday. He sent his friends a WhatsApp message which read, “No one is helping me. I have decided to end my life.”

Upon receiving the message, his friends immediately rushed him to a hospital.

A close friend of the victim said, “He is handicapped; because of a few medical issues he couldn’t attend his classes and get the 75 per cent attendance in the first semester. He wasn’t allowed to repeat the course and he ended up getting a backlog in the following semester. He has written a supplementary exam for it, but the administration hasn’t released the results yet. The fear of not being able to clear his backlog has led to a lot of mental stress.”

At the hospital, the student’s stomach was pumped and washed. He is now in a stable condition. He will remain under observation for 48 hours.
