AI plays against best gamer, wins

-

Washington, Aug. 13: A bot designed by OpenAI, the startup backed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, defeated one of the world’s best gamers at a world championship video game contest.

Mr Musk hailed the achievement on Twitter, saying it was a significant advance over what AI had accomplished in more traditional games.

The bot beat Danylo “Dendi” Ishutin, a professional player who’s estimated to have earned $735,449.40 in winnings in his career, in the tactical wargame Defense of the Ancients 2 (DOTA2), Fortune reported.

DOTA2 is a multiplayer online battle arena game where players control one of dozens of different characters with varying abilities, and compete to collect items and control territory.

Dendi said the bot was “scary.” “Please, stop bullying me,” he was heard saying during the match.

The AI win has stunned the gaming community, because bots are generally considered inferior to expert human players, according to CNN.

“I am sure it is possible to beat it (the bot). But it has no room for even slight mistakes,” Dendi later wrote on Twitter.

This is not the first time a bot has made waves in the gaming world. Earlier this year, an AI built by Microsoft beat every level of the Ms Pac-Man game — something no human player has ever achieved, the CNN said. — Agencies
