2-yr-old rescued from borewell
After an 11-hour operation, two-year-old A. Chandrasekhar was rescued without a scratch from the abandoned borewell into which he had fallen on Tuesday. Working through the night, rescuers pulled out the boy early on Wednesday.
Chandrasekhar was trapped at about 15-foot depth of the 100-foot borewell in Ummadivaram in Vinukonda mandal of Guntur district on Tuesday.
Locals began a rescue operation at about 5.30 pm on Tuesday by digging a parallel pit away to reach the boy from the side.
After an 11-hour operation, two-year-old A. Chandrasekhar was rescued without a scratch from the abandoned borewell into which he had fallen on Tuesday.
The National Disaster Response Force stepped in by about 7.30 pm. The NDRF first lowered a robotic arm which secured Chandrasekhar to prevent him from slipping further down the borewell. The NDRF tried to pull up Chandrasekhar using the arm but an iron rod prevented the attempt. Then it rained at 10 pm, forcing officials to take measures to prevent water from entering the borewell.
Meanwhile, the attempt to reach Chandrasekhar from the parallel pit ran into a massive limestone boulder. The NDRF deployed heavy duty drills and worked for four hours to dig through it.
At about 2.30 pm, the NDRF personnel reached the borewell from this pit at a spot below where Chandrasekhar was held by the robotic arm. The arm was then released and Chandrasekhar slipped into the arms of rescuers, unharmed.
Hundreds of officials, rescuers from the NDRF, revenue, police, fire department and villagers who had gathered at the spot broke out in cheers as the NDRF team lifted Chandrasekhar to safety.
A team of doctors examined the two-year-old and declared him safe.
