Rohingyas under scanner

-

The officials from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) will be checking the documents of Rohingyas staying in the city. There are around 3,800 Rohingyas in the Hyderabad commissionerate area with the south zone having the highest number.

The refugees arrived in large numbers in 2012 during the violence in the Arkan and Rakhine regions of Myanmar. A few more batches came in 2014 and 2015 as well. They are now settled in Hafeezbabanagar, Royal Colony and Kishanbagh areas of south zone. Some families are reportedly staying independently near these settlements.

“The screening is being done as the home ministry has asked us to identify and deport the Rohingyas who are staying here illegally. So in coordination with FRRO personnel, we will check their documents and initiate action against those who are staying illegally,” said DCP (south) V. Satyanarayana.

The Rohingyas, according to the official, were linked to some terror cases and so they are strictly monitoring their activities.

Central law enforcement agencies have asked the police to zero in on all foreign nationals who are staying illegally in the city. Following the advisory, the police recently conducted a midnight check in houses where foreign students are staying in Sainikpuri, Asifnagar, Golconda, Banjara Hills and Tolichowki.
