HARASSED GIRL ENDS LIFE IN HOSTEL

-

Unable to bear the harassment by her seniors and the pathetic conditions of the hostel, a 17year-old polytechnic student committed suicide in Sangareddy district.

The student Sahasra in her suicide note said that she was undergoing hell in the hostel. Meanwhile, her parents and villagers staged a protest in front of the hostel demanding action to be taken on college authorities and blamed hostel authorities for the girl’s suicide.

According to the police, A. Sahasra who is from Nagarkurnool district completed her SSC in March 2016 and topped in her school. She joined the department of Agriculture in Ratnapuri Polytechnic College.

From the time she had joined the hostel, she was uncomfortable with the facilities there. The hostel lacked basic facilities, and students were forced to share their cots. To add to this the hostel did not have a full-time female warden to take care of the girls. Unable to bear this, she hanged herself from the ceiling of her room. Her suicide note said, “God, I am undergoing hell here. It is a waste to study in this college.”

Meanwhile, Sahasra’s father Rajashekar blamed the hostel authorities for their negligent attitude. “Seniors have been harassing my daughter and there were no basic facilities for the girls. We took this to the notice of AO Bikshapathi, but it was of no use.” he said.

Five months ago, another student from Nizamabad district attempted suicide by jumping from the top of the building, but survived. With repeated incidents in the hostel, parents are worried.
