Scholars call for ‘Clean Bakrid’

- ASIF YAR KHAN | DC

Muslim elders and scholars have urged the community to ensure cleanliness during Bakrid, which is being celebrated on Saturday.

This Friday, the sermon will focus on ‘Clean Bakrid’.

The advice comes in the wake of animal waste and blood of sacrificial animals being dumped on main thoroughfares, causing hardship to the public.

“It is our basic duty to maintain cleanliness. Ensure that your neighbour is not put to hardship,” said Mufti Khaleel Ahmed, vice-chancellor, Jamia Nizamia.

Maulana Hasan Bin Jawad, Imam of Shahi Masjid Bagh-e-Aam, said that Quran preaches cleanliness. The Quran says that one’s prayers alone are not enough to please Allah. You should also ensure you do not put others to inconvenience, said Maulana Jawad.

“The waste can be buried as it would act as manure and turn the ground fertile,” said Maulana Syed Hamid Hussain Shuttari, spokesperson, All India Sunni Ulema Board.

Dr Syed Nisar Hussain Agha, a Shia scholar and member of the Telangana State Wakf Board said that the unhygienic atmosphere created during the Bakrid is resulting in problems for people.

“Id is a time of celebrations and it should not disturb others. By proper planning, we can maintain cleanliness and ensure all communities participate in our celebrations,” he said. ‘Team Bakrid’, a city-based NGO will coordinate with GHMC and the police to ensure cleanliness.
