NINE DAYS AND NINE NAMES

1. ENGILIPOOL­A BATHUKAMMA

As flowers cannot be plucked on Amavasya, they are cut a day earlier and store it in water. Since this Bathukamma was prepared with old flowers, it is called engili bathukamma.

2. ATUKULA BATHUKAMMA

Bathukamma is made with tangedu, gunugu, banthi, chamanthi, adavi gaddipoolu. Since atukulu is gifted to other women, it is called Atukula Bathukamma.

3. MUDDAPAPPU BATHUKAMMA

It is decorated with chamanthi and mandara. Satthupind­i, green gram, sugar and jiggery are exchanged.

4. NANA BIYYAM BATHUKAMMA

Nana Biyyam (wet rice), sugar, jaggery are offered to others.

5. ATLA BATHUKAMMA

While it is made with the same flowers, it is called atla bathukamma because women gift atlu (pancake) to other women.

6. ALIGINA BATHUKAMMA

No Bathukamma is made on Day 6.

7. VEPAKAYALA BATHUKAMMA

Women decorate Bathukamma with flowers in seven steps. A dish made with rice flour is offered to other women.

8. VENNAMUDDA BATHUKAMMA

Women celebrate Vennamudda Bathukamma at the temple of Lord Hanuman. Sesame and jaggery is used as vayanam.

9. SADDULA BATHUKAMMA

Maximum flowers are used on Day 9. After this, women go to their mother's home to celebrate Dasara.
