MUMBAI STAMPEDE
RIP the innocent commuters who died in the stampede. Stations are antiquated and poorly maintained. The sealink was built at the cost of `1,600 crore. If a part of this money had been spent on the railways, the commuters would have been safe today. As a nation we get our priorities wrong. Nagarajamani M.V. Hyderabad
The Shiv Sena has rightly pointed out that the priority should not be the bullet train. Amid many accidents and British era infrastructure, the government should look into a total revamp of the railways. P.J. David Hyderabad
The arrival of three trains at a time contributed to the rush of passengers. The railway should schedule train arrivals better. Or, the number of exits should be increased. Varada Raja Swamy Hyderabad
The stampede was caused by the government’s negligence and by panic triggered by rumours. The government should have built proper infrastructure for the people. Monika Mohanty Secunderabad
Governments prepare budgets to develop infrastructure but give little to maintaining them. In spite of reminders from their own staff, the officers neglect infrastruture. K.V. Ratnakar Hyderabad
Railway infrastructure needs a total revamp. Instead of spending more than `1 lakh crore for a bullet train, the money can be utilised for improvement of infrastructure. Wasim Ahmed Khan Secunderabad
Many appeals from the public to construct a new foot over bridge were ignored. The railways must improve infrastructure at every station before it aspires to import a bullet train. M. Jeevanand Secunderabad
The problem is not with a bridge or the government. It is with the mindset of the people. If every person is concerned with his own survival, and not bothered about the others, there will be more such instances. Akshay Parikh Hyderabad
The railways must plan for wider foot over bridges for passengers. The foot over bridge at Lingampalli, Secunderabad division, is very narrow, and a new one is needed. Noor Malkajgiri
I have been seeing the Elphinstone Road bridge for nearly 60 years. It has not been repaired nor an alternative contemplated. If only the commuters were aware of their responsibilities, such incidents could have been avoided. T.M. Uday Shankar Hyderabad
