Unidentified biker rams into 63-year-old man, flees scene

-

A 63-year-old man died after being hit by a speeding bike in Malakpet. Prakashchandra Upadhyaya, the victim, was on his way home when he was hit by a biker who subsequently sped away. Passers-by tried to nab the biker, but he managed to give them the slip and sped off into the by-lanes. Eyewitnesses to the incident said that the biker appeared to have been underage.

The Chaderghat police are looking into the case. They have been unable to trace the bike because CCTV cameras in the region were disconnected at the time because of the ongoing metro rail works.

Upadhyaya, a resident of Anand Nagar in Malakpet, was the manager of a hotel in Lakdi-ka-pul. He had quit his job to stay at home after suffering an injury to his leg. On Thursday evening, he had gone to a nearby market to purchase some vegetables. He was hit by the biker when he was crossing the road on his way back home.

Upadhyay was flung into the air upon impact because the bike was travelling at a high speed. He fell at a distance and suffered severe injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Passers-by tried to catch the biker but in vain. “He was moving at a very high speed, and he entered into a by-lane. We chased him on bikes, but he managed to escape,” an eyewitness said.

Upadhyay was identified based on a photograph and an old electricity bill that he had been carrying in his pocket. The victim was rushed to a private hospital nearby, and later to Osmania Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Friday.

The Chaderghat police have registered a case of accidental death. Eyewitnesses have only been able to tell them that the bike was a black Yamaha FZ. None of them was able to take note of the license plate number.

An official, on condition of anonymity, said, “The lack of CCTV camera footage is one of the reasons why we have not been able to track down the biker. The CCTV cameras have been disconnected because of the ongoing metro flyover works. We are trying to look for other clues.” A 25-year-old businessman was arrested by the cyber cell unit on Friday for stalking and posting photos of his neighbour, a undergraduate student, on Youtube. The accused was identified as Pusa Govardhan from Kargil Nagar in Karwan.

The victim lodged a complaint on Thursday, stating that her neighbour befriended her and exchanged phone numbers on social media accounts. “He copied her family pictures from her Facebook account and made lewd comments on her. After this, she stopped responding to his calls and messages,” said the police.

About one week back, she was surprised to know that someone had uploaded her family pictures on Youtube with abusive comments.

During the interrogation, the accused confessed that since the victim did not react positively to his advancements, he bore a grudge against her and uploaded her family pictures.

Two smartphones containing images and videos of victim have been seized from his possession.
