Samiya, Kavipriya & Keyura in semis

Hyderabad, Oct. 6: Three Hyderabad-based shuttlers — Samiya Imad Farooqui, Kavipriya Selvam & Keyura Mopati — advanced to semifinals of the Asian Junior Championsh­ips being played in Yangon, Myanmar.

Third seeded Samiya defeated Japan’s Kaoru Sugiyama 14-21, 21-13, 21-13 in the girls Under 15 singles quarters and will next play countrymat­e Aashi Rawat who beat Japan’s Sorano Yoshikawa 21-15, 21-16.

In the U-17 girls doubles quarterfin­als, Keyura Mopati and Kavipriya Selvam succeeded in dismantlin­g the Malaysian duo of Jing Err Gan and Valeree Zi Xuan Siow as the scoreline read 21-10, 211. Earlier in the second round, the semifinali­sts defeated Maytinee Kunaanuvit and Pichamon Phatchara- phisutsin pair of Thailand with a 21-13, 17-21, 21-16 verdict.

Samiya and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela however suffered a 21-19, 15-21, 2119 loss to Miki Kanehiro and Komi Kushima of Japan in their girls U-17 doubles second round match. They had got a bye in the first round.
