Steroid abuse can form cataract early

-

Hyderabad: Early development of cataract and glaucoma is due to steroid abuse by fitness buff so that they look better, according to eye specialists. They said that this category of people is at high risk. Senior ophthalmologist Dr Kasu Prasad Reddy said, “The culture of gym fitness has led to a lot of youngsters opting for steroids for a better physique. The side effects also involve damage to the eyes. Prolonged usage of these drugs can lead to early cataract and glaucoma.” Cataract is an age-related disease and can be seen only after 60 to 65 years of age, but steroid-abuse can advance it by 10 years. Steroids are also prescribed to treat chronic inflammatory conditions such as bowel disease, asthma, eczema, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Doctors warn patients not to misuse these drugs as it can lead to early loss of vision.
