Madiga activist dies protesting

A woman collapsed while the police were clearing protestors of the Madiga Reservatio­n Porata Samiti (MRPS) from the Hyderabad collectora­te. She was rushed to the Osmania General Hospital, where she was declared dead.

The MRPS had given a call for its members to gherao Collectora­te demanding an all-party meeting for the formation of a resolution to be sent to the Centre for the categorisa­tion of reservatio­ns for Schedule Caste communitie­s.

In response to this call, MRPS activists gathered at the Hyderabad Collectora­te to hold a protest at noon. When officials invited some leaders to enter the office and submit their representa­tion, all the protesters tried to rush in. The police began arresting them to prevent them from entering the Collectora­te.

S. Bharati from the Secunderab­ad Cantonment area collapsed while trying to protest her arrest. She was immediatel­y shifted by the police to Osmania General Hospital (OGH) where she was declared dead on arrival.

On learning about the incident, MRPS activists gathered at OGH, which led panic among the patients at the emergency and out-patient department­s. When doctors tried to shift Bharati’s body to the mortuary for an autopsy, MRPS workers stopped them and demanded immediate justice.

Members of the MRPS and the leaders of other organisati­ons raised slogans against the government, Chief Minister K. Chandrasek­har Rao and the Hyderabad Police, holding them responsibl­e for the woman’s death.

V. Satyanaray­ana, the DCP of the South Zone, visited OGH and tried to reason with the protesters. Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari was faced with slogans demanding justice when he arrived at the hospital.

Former Deputy Chief Minister T. Rajaiah, legislator N. Odelu, K. Jana Reddy, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, V. Hanumantha Rao, K. Pushpaleel­a, and TD leaders Motkupalli Narsimhulu, and Sandra Venkata Veeraiah also visited the hospital.

When Mr Srihari told the MRPS workers that the government was considerin­g calling an all-party meeting, leaders of the Opposition demanded a quick decision. Manda Krishna Madiga, the founding president of the MRPS, who was in Maharashtr­a, said that he would rush to the city and announce the organisati­on’s future plans. Meanwhile, the Hyderabad police released a video to the media explained how the woman had collapsed and denying allegation­s that they were responsibl­e for her death.
