THE JURY IS STILL OUT

-

Emergency and demonetisation have two things in common — both hailed by the party in power, and both hurt the common man the most. While Emergency is now accepted as a national shame, the jury is still out on demonetisation. How the “celebrations versus condemnation” play out is yet to be seen.

J.S. Acharya Tarnaka, Hyderabad One thing the Modi government is known for is the art of obfuscation. From political messaging, managing headlines, juggling numbers, blurring facts and changing narrative to stupefy people, the present government has often done its best to deflect attention by weaving its own story to score political points. The case with demonetisation is no different. All available data proves that note ban is an epic failure. P. Arihanth Secunderabad Prime Minister Narendra Modi is singularly responsible for inflicting grave damage on the Indian economy by his disastrous decision. The PM said removing black money from the economy would combat both terrorism and corruption, but there is no end of corruption and terrorism. Is this the ‘achhe din’ the BJP had promised? Mohammed Ibrahim

Hanamkonda Every Indian knows, but some will never admit it, that the gains from note ban were minor and nothing compared to the struggle and problems people experienced and the number of lives lost.

Anas Salahuddin Musheerabad, Hyderabad Former PM Manmohan Singh’s comment that demonetisation was organised loot is not justified as it was designed to control black money, terror activities and corruption. The end result is a different matter altogether. Attempting to do something good is not at all wrong. Gauri Shanker Dwivedi

Secunderabad Hats off to DC for the special pages on demonetisation. I fully agree with the mistakes due to centralised decision-making, as explained logically. The demonetisation exercise exposed tax evaders, black money hoarders and black sheep in the banking sector. I believe note ban is not a failure, but some dishonest people are trying to project it so.
