Schools warned on new admissions

Kadiam Srihari, Deputy Chief Minister and education minister, on Thursday warned private schools against making fresh admissions for the next academic year at this stage.

At the Question Hour in the Assembly, he said the government will not recognise such admissions and they will stand cancelled.

He asked parents not to approach schools for admissions after the existing academic year concludes in March 2018. He warned private schools of severe action if they make admissions for next year now.

Mr Srihari said the government will soon bring a regulatory mechanism to control fees and admissions in private schools based on the recommendations by the committee, headed by Prof Tirupati Rao, former OU vice-chancellor.

“The committee is expected to submit its report by month-end. The government will study the report and bring a regulatory mechanism to control fee and admissions in private schools. We are taking time for this because four unsuccessful attempts were made by previous governments to control fees by releasing GOs, which were quashed by courts. We don't want the situation to repeat. We are drafting a foolproof regulatory mechanism,” Mr Srihari said.

He stated that the government received complaints against several international, ICSE and CBSE schools as they have advanced their admission schedule for the next year. They are doing this to escape the new fee regulatory mechanism proposed by the Tirupathi Rao committee. He said various parents’ associations and students’ organisations have been agitating against indiscriminate fee hikes by private schools.
