I have a bit of a knee injury now. I have been off for about a month. I have a couple more weeks to take rest. I don’t know (about surgery), I am going to have to evaluate in the next couple of weeks. It was a tough year with my partners getting injured and stuff. — SANIA MIRZA Tennis player

Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza has been still weighing her options whether to go for knee surgery or not. The former World No. 1 has been sidelined due to knee injury for about a month.

“I have a bit of a knee injury now. I have been off for about a month. I have a couple more weeks to take rest. I don’t know (about surgery), I am going to have to evaluate in the next couple of weeks.” Sania said at the Red Carpet of Indian Sports Honours awards night on Saturday.

The Hyderabadi player started the year as the world No. 1 player but has dropped to No. 12 now in WTA doubles rankings (as on Sunday). She was in the top 10 consistently in the last four years. Besides her own injury off late, injuries to her partners have also affected her campaign this year.

“It was a tough year with my partners getting injured and stuff. Yes I have a little bit of problems..but all in all I still finished close to top 10 and yeah, I am happy with the year.”

After her fruitful partnership ended with Martina Hingis last year despite being at the helm, she has partnered Barbora Strycova, Yaroslava Shvedova and most recently, Shuai Peng without top success.

Meanwhile, India’s nonplaying Davis Cup captain Mahesh Bhupathi said that it was just a matter of time for young Ramkumar Ramanathan to break into the top 100. Yuki Bhambri is still the top ranked India but he has battled injuries. The 23-year-old Chennaiborn Ramanathan is currently ranked 148 in the men’s singles and is set to participate in the $50000 ATP Challenger in Pune starting from Monday.

“He is much younger, so we will give him some time. He is found a good coach and he is comfortable with Emilio Sanchez, so he is doing the right thing , so now it is just the matter of breaking into the top 100,” he said.
