Godavari water, under Mission Bhagiratha scheme, has reached the Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district before the deadline and purified drinking water is being supplied to a majority of the flourideaffected habitation in the trial-run. The project of supplying Godavari water to as many as 1.16 lakh households in 545 habitations from Shamirpet reservoir with an estimate cost of `800 crore is scheduled to be completed by March, 2018. But with the initiative taken by the district collector Ms Anita Ramachandran who is monitoring the day-to-day status of the work, majority of the mandals in the district have got the water earlier than expected.

Ms Anita Ramachandran said, “Presently, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is releasing water to the district on trial-basis. We are expecting full-fledged supply from December this year after completing internal pipeline work and after connections are provided to all the households. Work for the supply of Krishna water is also in progress and we are expecting the supply to other parts of the district by March 2018, which is also earlier than the actual deadline.”

So far, the government has laid 43 km of main pipeline from Shamirpet to Bhuvanagiri through Turkapally, Bommala Ramaram and Bibinagar mandals. Besides this it has laid 1,300 km of secondary pipelines which are supplying water to overhead tanks. Some of these already existed while there are few newly constructed ones as well. Out of 44 overhead/GLBR tanks, 14 are old.

According to an official, as per the present requirement, the HMWSSB will supply 60 million litres water per day to 1.16 lakh households. Currently, in the trial-run, the HMWSSB is supplying 40 MLD. “The entire project is planned for the requirement in the next 30 years (2048). As per our calculations, 100 MLD will be required after 2040.”

Meanwhile, MissionBhagiratha officials who are working on the Krishna Water project, say that soon the remaining five mandals will be getting purified water.
