STATE TO HOLD SWEETS FEST ON PONGAL EVE

The Telangana government is planning to conduct Sweets festival on the eve of Pongal from January 13 to 15.

Different communitie­s settled in Hyderabad like Gujratis, Marwaris, Rajasthani­s, Bengalis, Tamilians, Kannadigas, Malalayali­s, Punjabis, Kashmiris to name a few along with people belonging to France, South Korea, Turkey, Philippine­s, Brazil etc. will be taking part in this fete to be held at Parade ground. Each community would be bringing home-made sweets that are most popular in their state.

According to B.Venkatesam, secretary (Tourism), nearly thousand varieties of sweets will be put up in sweet stalls for food lovers to taste and buy. He said that they are not inviting sweet shops and hotels to present their products and have decided to give the women folk from different communitie­s a chance to showcase their culinary skills.

Mamidi Harikrishn­a, director of tourism, said that this fete will be special since mouth-watering and delicious dishes of different states and foreign countries will be at display.

A kite festival will also be held along with the sweets festival. In view of this year’s social cause to create awareness about importance of education and empowermen­t of girl children, the organisers have roped in Malavath Poorna, the youngest woman to scale Mount Everest, to be the face of the two festivals.

Each community would be bringing home-made sweets to the festival that are most popular in their state.
