The police has booked cases against the principal of Pragati High School as well as two students of the school, for the suicide of a class IX student, who burnt herself at her residence in Sangareddy and succumbed to her injuries on Monday.

The girl, Lavinya, who was only 14 years old, was allegedly harassed constantly by the two boys, a 15-year-old in the same school, and his friend.

She had complained about this to the principal, Srecha Reddy, who did not bother to do anything about it, according to the police.

“When her complaint to the principal fell on deaf ears, she felt helpless and attempted to commit suicide by dousing herself with kerosene when she was alone at home and set herself ablaze earlier this week,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police, Patancheru, Mr Sitaram.

She sustained 45 per cent body burns and was rushed to Gandhi Hospital by her parents.

After days of undergoing treatment, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital on Monday, the police said.

Based on a complaint from the girl’s parents, cases have been booked against the school principal and against the boys under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
