- AMITA VERMA | DC LUCKNOW, JAN. 8

An Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) scholar, who had gone to his home in Kashmir on a vacation, has apparently joined the Hizbul Mujahideen.

The UP police was shocked to find that the scholar Mannan Bashir Wani, 26 had posted his photograph, holding an AK-47 assault rifle, on the social media on Sunday. Senior police officials and intelligence agencies have reached Aligarh to investigate the matter.

SSP Aligarh Rajesh Pandey has raided Wani’s room in Habib hall and has seized documents and literature from the room. “We will study what kind of literature has been found in the room,” he said.

University students attempted to protest against the police entering the hostel and one student was arrested.

An Aligarh Muslim University scholar, who had gone to his home in Kashmir on a vacation, has apparently joined the Hizbul Mujahideen.

AMU proctor Dr Mohd Mohsin Khan said Mannan Bashir Wani had been expelled following reports of his having joined a terror outfit.

Earlier, a senior J&K official reportedly said that it could not be confirmed if Wani had actually joined the Hizbul group. He said the photograph could have been doctored.

Wani had been studying at the AMU’s department of Geology and had chosen to specialise in Applied Geology. The scholar, in his mid-twenties, had enrolled in the university’s PhD programme and won accolades for his paper on flood risk assessment at his home town in north Kashmir using remote sensing and GIS techniques.
