Bangla stun SL, chase down 214

-

Colombo, March 10: Mushfiqur Rahim hit a glittering 35-ball 72 as the Bangladesh tigers stunned Sri Lanka by chasing down 214 in 19.4 overs with five wickets in hand here in the Nidahas Twenty20 Tri-Series on Saturday night.

In his fine unbeaten innings, Rahim hit five fours and four sixes to guide his side home.

Chasing the huge target, Bangladesh openers Tamil Iqbal (47) and Liton Das (43) set the platform right for their side. In the powerplay, Bangladesh scored 74 with the loss of 1 wicket.

Earlier, Blazing half-centuries by Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera powered Lanka to 214 for six.

Mendis (57) and Perera (74) toyed with the Bangladesh attack with a flurry of boundaries and sixes, to the delight of the home crowd at the Premdasa Stadium.

Invited to bat after a drizzle delayed the toss by 15 minutes, Sri lanka were off to a flying start with Mendis putting on 56 runs for the opening wicket with Danushka Gunathilaka (26). Bangladesh pacers were guilty of bowling short and the Lankans took full advantage of that, pummelling them for 70 runs in the six mandatory powerplay overs.

That the visitors persisted with bowling short despite getting smacked, too helped Sri Lanka’s cause. — Agencies
