MILD TREMORS FELT IN CITY

- COREENA SUARES | DC

Minor earthquake tremors were felt at JNTU Road-next to Manjeera mall, Kukatpally. The area is close to Hitex city. The earthquake occurred between 7 and 7.30 pm on Tuesday. Many visitors inside the Manjeera mall ran onto the roads; however no causalities or building damage was reported.

The local seismology observatory at Kukatpally did not record any tremors in the reported time mentioned, said NGRI officials.

An eye witness shared first person account details with Deccan Chronicle, said, “We felt the tremors at Radio Mirchi office located in Kukatpally. There was a live show on when the tremors started. Even the Radio Jockey had left the building keeping the Radio on transmission mode.

Participants stepped out of the studio as multiple tremors occurred in a span of two to three minutes and all present in the building had to evacuate. The building association informed the GHMC.”

Another eye witness Ms. Meher from Radio Mirchi said, “Around 7:15 pm to 7:30 pm we felt the tremors in our office in KPHB. The water bottles and monitors on our tables were shaking. It was consistent and went on for few minutes. Our office is located on the ninth floor of the 18storeyed building. As we felt the tremors, majority of those present were evacuated.”

Residents informed that a few pockets of Kukatpally had been witnessing mild tremors for the last few weeks. A social post read “Apparently for the last two weeks seismic activity has been reported around Kukatpally, Mild tremors were felt, however no damage was reported.”

However, Dr D. Sri Nagesh, head of the seismology observatory in NGRI, said, “Nothing has been recorded by the observatory equipment located in Kukatpally. The same episode of Borabanda was repeated. Though tremors were felt, the equipment initially did not record any.”

Tremors are not new to these parts of Hyderabad. In November 2017, mild tremors were felt in Jubilee Hills, KBR Park, parts of Banjara Hills, Rahmatnagar and Borabanda. And in October Borabanda had experienced as many as 16 micro-tremors in a span of 13 hours. Two seismographic stations of NGRI had recorded these microtremors.
