HERITAGE PLACES SHOULD BE LEASED, SAY HISTORIANS

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Historians and heritage activists opine that the government should explore the option of leasing out heritage monuments in the heart of the city to cafeterias. The scheme would help generate revenue to protect the monument and for renovation work.

People would like to visit and spend time at such historic places. There is ample free space at the Government High School, Mahboobia and Government High School, Aliya. If the open space is leased out after school hours, it will help the government earn revenue. The revenue earned can then be used for restoration work in the monuments,” Asif Ali, a heritage activist, feels.

Dr Md Safiullah said that there are several heritage monuments located in prime areas of the city. “There should be a way to generate revenue to protect these structures. Wherever possible, authorities should explore the idea of leasing it out for commercial activity with measures, to ensure protection of the monument. Only in this way, can these monuments be maintained in good condition,” he said.
