IIT-H trains teachers on teaching strategies

The Teaching Learning Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology — Hyderabad (IIT-H) is conducting training sessions on teaching strategies for 21st-Century professionals, for the teachers and faculty members of various colleges, as part of a project of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

IIT-H has already trained over 1,500 teachers of various disciplines of engineering in the past couple of years. It has conducted subject-specific training as well as general induction programs.

The workshops being conducted by IITH are designed to accommodate 60 candidates each. They are open to those who have attended previous sessions as well as new entrants. Participants will be provided certificates for the individual workshops that they attend.

Induction training sessions for new faculty members are currently being carried out. The participants are familiarised with new teaching and learning methods, instructional methodologies, assessment and evaluation techniques, ICT-enabled teaching and learning, as well as rules and regulations.

Dr Mudrika Khandelwal, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering of IITH, says, “We have already inducted over 100 faculty members in phase 1 of the program. We are organising sessions on various topics over the next three months to complete the training process. A workshop on pedagogic techniques and teaching and learning methods was organized on February 27 and 28. It was followed by a workshop on assessment and evaluation, and university structure, which was held on March 3 and 4.”

Teachers who attend all workshops and complete the required hours of training will receive a certificate of completion. “The program is mandated by the MHRD,” adds Dr Khandelwal.
