Docs demand inquiry in NIMS suicide case

Resident doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences have demanded an inquiry into the suicide of Dr Siva Teja alleging that he was humiliated and was a victim of blame game by senior doctors who placed the responsibility of deaths at the Intensive Care Unit on Siva’s name due to which he was extremely stressed and depressed. There were three warnings issued to him which led to severe depression and he also broke down in front of his friends.

“On Saturday night, he had to give the reports of three MRI’s to a senior consultant but the technician refused to carry out the MRI due to which he was stressed,” alleged the resident doctors. The doctors have demanded an inquiry about the behaviour of senior doctors in the Neurology department as it is alleged that they humiliated Siva in objectionable language in front of the staff and also patients and attendants.

Dr G. Srinivas, advisor to Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association explained that Siva was targeted academically and his posters were rejected by senior doctors without any grounds. “He was a merit student and never refused to do any work. But he got no reprieve from the gruelling work. He was individually targeted and that is being seen in many cases leading to mental agony,” he said.

Doctors alleged that they are forced to do more projects, gruelling duty and also extra work of the senior consultants.
