TRANSCO WORK CAUSES TRAFFIC WOES

- ANUSHA PUPPALA | DC HYDERABAD, APRIL 23

Residents of RK Puram, Sainikpuri and nearby areas are facing severe inconvenience as the entire stretch of the road at RK Puram is only open to oneway traffic owing to ongoing work on Transmission Corporation of Telangana (Transco) projects. So severe is the traffic chaos that residents have been volunteering their services to assist the traffic police in the area between Military Hospital and RK Puram road.

Residents said the traffic jams are particularly heavy from 6pm to 10 pm, and they have identified a few points which need signage to improve the flow of vehicles.

Sainikpuri resident G.P. Raghuraman said, “Heavy traffic and narrow roads are causing commuters to reach home very late as they have to take a longer route. Additionally, street lights are not functioning right from Tirumalgiri to Military Hospital. The military authorities should relax night restrictions on Gough Road at least until the Transco work is completed, which will help emergency vehicles as well as commuters.”

Fellow Sainikpuri resident C.S. Chandrashekar said, “We have formed a group comprising residents of various colonies aged between 35 and 75, and we have taken up traffic duty along with the traffic cops from Military Hospital to RK Puram Road.”

Tirumalgiri traffic CI Abibulla Khan said, “RK Puram Road was made oneway because of the ongoing rectification work by the Transco as some underground lines were damaged, owing to which RK Puram Road is suffering traffic congestion during peak hours. The road will be one-way until April 29, and commuters will have to use the diversions near Military Hospital and other nearby lanes. Residents are also helping us clear traffic jams during peak hours.”
